Sutra Foundation a sacred space for Art and
Classical Indian Dance
April 7th 2007 was a landmark day in the History of Fine arts and Dance in Malaysia. The "Sutra Foundation" the dream child of the internationally acclaimed, Odissi and Bharathanatyam Dancer, Teacher and Choreographer Ramli Ibrahim was officially launched.
The Foundation located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur exists as a tribute to art. Its Goal is to bring alive both Traditional and contemporary Performing Arts in Malaysia. The foundation is an offering to the creative spirit that transcends all boundaries, a place where the dancer' gesture, painter's stroke and musician's melody are held in equal measure. The foundation is a living legacy bequeathed to Malaysia and to the world by one of Malaysia's most celebrated sons, Ramli Ibrahim. The Sutra Foundation carries into the future the luminous thread of his vision and contribution to the arts scene.
The Malaysian government through the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage at the moment is promoting a broader based cultural perspective in its policies. Once, Culture and Arts were subservient to Tourism and this was eventually counter-productive to the real development of culture and arts. This development in turn will be a moderating factor to counter extremist tendencies which is the present global trend. It is only through the awareness of culture, arts and the environment that the universal ethos of live and let us live the timeless wonder met of nature and also of human Endeavour can be fostered and appreciated.
This mega event in the grand Ballroom of the savvy Crown Princess Hotel in Kuala Lumpur had a guest list glitterati and the cream of the art world. The special guest of honor was the Maharaja of Udaipur Shri Arvind Singh Mewar, Feng Shui Master & Vaastu Consultant S.BS.Surendran and Lalit Verma, Director Aurodhan art Gallery. The Official launch of the foundation by the Minister of culture, Arts & heritage Malaysia YB Dato' Seri Utama (Dr) Rais Yatim was followed by a exceptional Dance Performance collage which had a blend of traditionally Malay Dance, Odissi and Bharathanatyam performed by Ramli Ibrahim and students of Sutra dance Theatre which received a standing ovation.
Ramli Ibrahim was honored and a souvenir was presented by Feng Shui Master S.BS. Surendran and the preceding speech by Lalit Verma, Director, Aurodhan gallery, Pondicherry was one of the highlights of the evening.
Sutra Foundation would be a platform not only for performing artist across the globe to exhibit their talent but it would also cultivate and produce future dancers and would be a laboratory where scholarships would be given to gifted students, new ideas discussed and experiments on trans-cultural and inter -cultural works are conceived and created.
With a history spanning more than two decade, the establishment of "Sutra" as a foundation will ensure that many more stars are born, all of whom will make their mark internationally.
