Orientation plays a crucial role in Vaastu science and it is not limited to the plot alone but also for the main door and entrance gate. When Vaastu design is adapted for buildings more space, more doors, windows and open space is provided in the northern and eastern directions of the property. Even tall trees and plants in the North and east sector are avoided and the ground level is kept lower in the North and east sectors of the plot.
Understanding the science of Vaastu and adapting it in the design of homes calls for precision combined with tasteful aesthetics. When we look at a building the first impression we derive determines the kind of energy existing within it and you get a feel about the lifestyle of the occupants too.
The pathway leading to the main door from the gate is equally important as it has a great impact on the flow of energy leading to the house. Any obstructions in the pathway stones or bushes hanging over are considered as bad Vaastu. Creating a gently curving pathway with plant hedges on either side of the pathway enhances the flow of energy and the main door in turn receives positive energy flow.
Designing and placing the main door and frame is an essential part of a building construction hence adapting the right dimensions, material and position ensures that the house is not deprived of good energy which would in turn affect the occupants over a period of time.
Main door is the most important area in a building; both Vaastu and Feng Shui attach great importance not just for the position but also for the auspicious time to place the frame and door during construction. The main entrance holds a unique position in relation to the rest of the doors in the house hence; additional care is required in attending to the requirements of this door.
The position of the main door is quite critical as each compass direction has exalted or positive direction or debilitated or negative directions. Hence one needs to take extra care while designing the home to ensure that the main door is in the exalted position.
The Front door is considered as the Mouth of the “Vaastu Purusha” (the protecting deity) the mouth is the largest orifice in human body hence the front door in a home should be large and inviting. The ideal height for a door should be approximately three times the width of the door. If the shortcoming is noticed in the door, the immediate need is not to go for replacement right away, Instead the remedy lies in giving an artful decorative treatment along the margin zone around the main frame to make it stand out and speak for itself as most prominent.
The main door frame must be provided with a threshold (door sill) at the bottom. This serves as a safety measure against the trespassing insects, rodents and reptiles which are otherwise invited by the passage lurking in the space, howsoever small, between the shutter and the floor where the sill is not provided. From Vaastu perspective, the missing fourth side of the frame which rests firmly on the floor represents the element composed of fulfilment, wholesomeness and stability so a main door frame which is four sided is considered very good and is even better if it has a windows on either side.
The view when the front door opens should be pleasant and inviting similarly when you open the door to step out of the house, the view should be good and not overwhelmed by shadows of trees and creepers , moreover if the trees shadows fall or cut across the main door it is considered very unlucky.
Vaastu tenets specify that the total number of doors in a building should be even. The main door should not be placed exactly on the cardinal axis as this is considered unsuitable for home and office use but is acceptable for places of worship; hence it is recommended that the door be positioned slightly away from the cardinal axis for homes.
The quality of timber deployed in the making of the main door should be good and Teak doors are preferred although mango wood, sandal are considered good but metal door frame and shutters for the main door are very bad. The shutter of the main door should be fixed such that on opening it moves towards the inside of the house and not outward. The shutter should have a single panel preferably, however If the number of shutter panels are more, then the total number should be uneven. The level of the main entrance should be a little higher than the approach way and the steps leading onto it should be odd in number.
Sliding doors and swinging doors are very inauspicious as they slice and impede the movement of energy. Doors which function smoothly without obstacles are good however doors which are squeaky and make noise when opened are not good and are said to bring in enemies and destruction into the home.
It is considered auspicious if the entrance to the property and the main door of the house are on the same side and it is inauspicious if the main door to the house is on the opposite side to the entrance of the property. Water body or underground tank, septic tank ( sewage tank), or canal under the main entrance is a taboo and is said to cause loss of wealth and triggers sickness to the occupants.
Most homes adapt symbols around the main door to ward of bad luck and usher in protection and good energy into the homes. The statue or image of the Indian Elephant faced god known as “Ganesh” is often found outside the house above the main door as it is said to bring in prosperity and progress as the Lord Ganesh represents the merging of the small ( man) with the great ( elephant) and blends the microcosm with the macrocosm.
Some homes display the Positive symbol “Swastika” which is considered as a very powerful symbol representing peace, prosperity and harmony. It is also said to ward off negative energy and usher in more positive energy into the home. The other most powerful symbol which can be displayed around the main door or on either sides is “OM”. Carving images of gods, wild life, and fierce animals are all considered inauspicious hence a nice door with panels which is clean, and well maintained is preferred from the Vaastu perspective.
Vaastu and Feng Shui are all about symmetry and proportion which not only enhances the quality of the energy but radiates positivity. Adapting the right dimension and position for the main door ensures that the house is well guarded against negative energy flow and adds to the elegance and beauty of the building.
