Significance of Northeast in Vaastu

Vastu is a science which acts as a bridge between the inner space of the being and the outer space or the immediate environment. Many call it a  “super science” or study of the cause and effect of your surroundings and its influence on the occupants. It’s multidisciplinary approach is based on basic knowledge of Yogashastra (the science of Yoga), Astrology, and Astronomical Science.

The five great holistic sciences which are completely interconnected and in totality form a comprehensive remedial field to convert an individual's journey of pain and struggle into harmony and rhythm are Vastu, Music, Astrology, Yoga and Ayurveda. You could compare this to Fengshui, Chinese medicine (acupuncture), Taichi, Chinese astrology (phat chee), Chinese calligraphy and music.

Vastushastra (Vastu science) essentially deals with two important energy sources, the solar energy flux and the geomagnetic energy flux. The science of vastu aims at controlling the flow of these energies in a building by selecting proper directions and alignments. Starting with Location of doors, windows, color scheme, flooring patterns, planting of trees and interior décor need to be looked into. All these essential parameters play an important role in enhancing the energy field for human beings to live in harmony with nature and in turn achieve a balance.

To achieve a right balance of these natures’ forces, cosmic and thermal imbalances, Vaastu offers a remedy in the form of the helix concept also known as the ‘Golden ratio Helix”. It finds reference in all the ancient scriptures as the centre of energy balance is located at the origin of a logarithmic helix fitted in a rectangle with sides having proportionate golden ratio of 1:1.618. The ill effects of a Vaastu defects diminish automatically if this helix centre lies inside the building. This center is known as the “nabhi” or the focal point of the plot and is the source of all cosmic energies and bio energetic fields. Hence balancing the building within a given plot and tapping into the focal point is the key to achieving a good structure which enhances the flow of energy and good vaastu. However this may not be feasible at all times as limitations in terms of plot size, shape, apartment dwellings  etc exists but one could adapt certain basic guidelines by paying attention to important sectors and compass directions in a plot or building.

A structure contributes towards the prosperity of its occupants and most importantly, everything that happens in nature has a direct effect on the life of human. The cosmic rays from the sun, moon and other planets also have an effect on human body and research has shown that we respond and react accordingly. It was also found by the ancients that time period changes through the day had an affect on the human mind and body which in turn stimulated a corresponding activity.

Buildings were designed and oriented with various components to harmonize the movement of the sun and daily human cycle according to the rotation of the earth and the position of the sun through the days. The 24 hours in a day was divided into eight parts, representing the eight cardinal directions and the nature of each activity in a building reflected the quality of each compass direction. It was observed that Houses that were not properly aligned or had no sense of orientation, gave rise to restlessness, misfortune, and sickness.

Out of the eight compass directions the North-east known as “Ishanya” in Vastu has a special importance. The sun rises from the East, moves towards the North and sets in the West hence the early morning rays are very important and it is considered very auspicious if the building or the land is able to receive this sunlight in the morning.

The early morning rays to a great extent are  absorbed by water stored in the Northeast sector of a plot hence  from the ancient times, under water storage, open reservoirs for water storage and tanks were  considered ideal at the Northeast corner of the plot and in turn this enhanced  the positive benefits of  good vaastu design.

Keeping the Northeast completely clean, clutter free and light is the fundamental principle and is mandatory in designing a home as per vaastu tenets. Having the land at the Northeast portion of the plot lower or depressed naturally or by creating garden space is of great importance to activate the bio-cosmic energies in this sector to further enhance the good luck of the property.

The Northeast direction is also regarded as highly surcharged with divine energies hence heavy constructions or large structures in the Northeast portion of the plot or a home is a taboo. The Northeast sector is also referred to as “Ishanya” (meaning God’s corner) keeping in mind the highly positive and life force energy existing in this portion and from the vaastu perspective this sector is considered very sacred and in many homes  this corner is used  for the family altar or  prayer area.

We can also activate spiritual pursuits, education and knowledge in the Northeast sector or Ishanya. The ancient Indian holy saints or monks (known as rishis), of the  Vedic Age had mastered this knowledge and techniques and  It’s no surprise that the sacred places of worships, temples, monastery and ashrams of spiritual training  were established in this direction near the holy rivers. Even today, one can still experience and feel the distinctly enchanting, energizing and enlightening ambience at such places and a closer study would reveal that temples and places of worship have a water reservoir or large opening at the Northeast corners or a water body or river at this sector.

Certain basic guidelines to protect the Northeast sector while designing a building are:-

•Take care to design the house such that it allows ample sunlight and cross ventilation in the Northeast sectors to enhance the bio cosmic fields.

•Tall trees or plants should not exist in the North or Northeast sectors although small plants are acceptable. Ensure that the plants do not block the sunlight or cast shadow at the Northeast corners of the

property and the building and most importantly ensure that the trees or plants do not cast their shadow on the house in these sectors.

•Avoid keeping a mop, broomstick or trash can in this sector as this would pollute the positive energy flowing through this sector.

•Most importantly positioning toilets in the Northeast sector is a serious affliction as this would deprive the building from positive bio-cosmic forces and cause immense ill effects to the occupants.

Apart from Northeast if you can keep the following zones clutter free and clean it could be of benefit to certain types of professions too

•North, as this sector relates to intellectuals who wish to pursue their intellectual pursuits.

•East helps those in armed forces to and police.

•South is beneficial to those in business and traders.

•West is for the working class and those employed in middle management.

Understanding the cause and effect of the environment, compass direction and benefits of each of the sectors in a property ensures that the house and its occupants are healthy, happy and prosperous and in harmony with the nature’s forces.

2015 Feng shui afflictions & prognosis

The Year 2015 is year known as  The Year of the Yin Wood Sheep - YI WEI .

Sheep is the 8th animal in the 12 Chinese zodiac signs and is part of the fire cycle in the cycle of the season of five elements in Feng shui. The zodiac sheep is said to be a lucky animal sign  and is often expected to bring up auspicious and cordial relationship during the year . As sheep represents earth element it also has traits of caring and exudes a motherly feel and can be most often seen in those born under this zodiac.

In the Year 2015 taking into account the elements in combine and clash  based on the Feng shui Destiny Analysis known as the Four Pillars of Destiny ( Ba Zi) the two main elements in clash  are  Wood and  Earth. In the cycle of the five element theory, wood conquers earth which indicates clash however as it is Weak wood which is akin a flower conflicts and clash can be resolved through interaction, being flexible a common agreement can be reached hence it would be relatively less violent than the earlier year.

From the human body point of view, Element earth signifying zodiac sheep corresponds to stomach, muscular fibers and pancreas. This would call for taking care of diet, maintaining exercise regime to balance the insulin levels and avoid muscular ailments. The element earth is in clash with Weak or Yin wood.  Yin wood relates to   neck, liver and spine hence the clash of elements can aggravate spine related disorders.

Industries relating to metal and wood elements like banking, IT and tech related industries will see emerging  trends. Textiles, media, paper Industries which pertain to wood element will progress too.  Fire Industries like Finance, entertainment and energy will encounter slow progress especially during the first half of the year. Real Estate, property and mining would face competition as the strong earth in the year of the sheep will bring in new entrants, fierce competition and may have an overall conservative outlook.

The Annual energy changes have an influence on the place of dwelling and the occupants as the compass directions also relate to the twelve Chinese zodiacs. Adapting simple Feng shui remedies one can counter the ill effects and enhance the good energy in a home to reap the positive benefits the year brings in.

The good sectors in 2015 are North, East, and  Southwest. Water features at East or North sector can enhance career, growth and wealth luck. The sectors West and South East have bad energies and sickness hence metal cures, metal wind chimes or six nos. of I- Ching metal coins would help. North east and Northwest are good  with flying stars 6 and 4. To activate literary pursuits and education luck placing  children’s study desk at Northwest  of a room would help  and for elders who are single  it can also activate marriage luck. The centre sector of the building carries arguments and quarrelsome energies, placing a fire colored décor or a red table runner at the centre of the house can quell such energies. South sector is also unfavorable which can be controlled with water plants.

Those born in the years of Ox, Dog, Sheep, Rooster are in conflict with the yearly zodiac an can smoothen the ruffled weathers by carrying jade horse figurine or  they can display a figurine of horse at Southwest compass sector.

The general overview, forecast and analysis is based on the study of elements and the energy movements hence the implications on each of the individuals could vary as the personal elements of the individuals need to be analyzed for a deeper understanding.

Wishing you a prosperous and good Year ahead as we step into the year of the Yin Wood Sheep in 2015.

Green is good

The year 2015 is classified as the ‘Year of the Sheep’, based on oriental school of metaphysics and feng shui. The Year of the Sheep has many facets, however the implications on the luck of the individual can be analysed and one can take proper care to counter ill luck or enhance the good luck phase in their respective lives.

As we step into another year, it’s quite common for many to have hopes and aspirations for a better year and to achieve all that one desires. However, to make things supportive and aid the aspirations the feng shui of the home could be looked into.

Feng shui is all about creating a space that exudes harmony, peace and happiness; hence, ensuring a good flow of energy in and around a structure is one of the key dynamics behind this age-old practice. If the immediate surrounding is not too harmonious, it is said to affect negatively certain aspirations in the life of the occupants such as relationship, wealth, family luck or cause illness.

From the subatomic particles to skyscrapers, from good vibes to auras, everything in the universe is said to be vibrating. Our personal vibrations interact with the vibrations of our environment including the people, places and things that make up our world. Art of feng shui helps in actively choosing or intending to engage with the favourable energy available to us at all times.

The universe is comprised of the interaction of the five elements and so is the internal system of the human body which is also made up of these five elements. When we are surrounded with symbols that generate positive energy, body, mind and soul is at peace, the aura is in balance and, in turn, it motivates the individual to bring out the best.

In feng shui, symbolism works due to energy-specific symbols based on the five elements which activate the right balance and positivity and in turn connect with the subconscious level of the occupants’ mind in a positive manner. Feng shui acts as a catalyst to activate the good luck of a space, but it is influenced by the energy, thought, action and deed of the occupants too. Any of the following simple methods could enhance positive energy in the premises.

  • Displaying figurine of dual fish in metal which represents strength, bondage and love for married couples is auspicious and a good luck charm, too. Maintaining clean live aquariums with active fish which enhance the element water are said to activate wealth luck.
  • Adapting green jade, peridot, green garnets in jewellery design is considered good. Green connotes freshness, vitality and it also signifies the wood element and growth, however, one could also enhance the wood element by placing live healthy plants.
  • Placing crystals in the four major corners of the home would help conquer bad energy or bad luck, and to bring plenty of wealth luck to the family, it also strengthens the earth energy as crystals represent earth element.
  • Crystal lotus flowers signify ability to remain rooted in the earth and rise to perfect purity above. It’s the universal symbol of the flowering of consciousness and spiritual attainment. Placing metal art décor or figurines, suspending oriental metal coins above the main door empowers the entrance with metal energy.
  • Wearing clear crystal, amethyst or rose quartz beads controls emotional imbalance, activates love, peace harmony and good health.

Feng Shui, Vaastu and Power of Pyramids

In the midst of the desert sand, rising to a height of 482 feet (140m) stands the great Pyramid of Giza - the tomb of the Emperor Khufu or Cheops. It would have taken over 2.3 million blocks of stone with an average weight of 2.5 tons each, making a total weight 6 million tons to create this gigantic engineering marvel.

How did the Egyptians two thousand years ago manage this feat? Was it the size of the structure or the shape of its geometry that is the source of the Pyramid’s power? . Here are some interesting findings about the Pyramid and discovers some similarities with Feng shui and Vaastu.

‘Pyra’ means fire and ‘Mid’ describes the energy resonating at the mid point. The word Pyramid, from the Greek “pyramidos” means a geometrical object, whose base is a polygon (3, 4, 5, etc.) and whose sides meet at one point - the apex of a pyramid. Mathematically, pyramids are projections of hemispheres and the famous Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, in its proportions and location is said to have a near perfect relationship with the dimensions of the Earth.

From ancient times, the Pyramids of Egypt have been acknowledged as powerful design structures that connect all kinds of energy forces. Its shape has been proven to possess the geometry that radiates healing powers.

When you observe the energy flow patterns in a pyramid by mapping it using Kirlian Photography, you will see that there are broadly two specific  phenomenon, ONE a concentration of energy that takes place around the vertical axis passing through the apex of the pyramid, at one third the height from its base, and TWO, energy coming out of the summit of the pyramid is in spiral form.

The Egyptians must have been aware of these energy patterns as they used this knowledge to build the kind of tomb that could preserve bodies within them. Thus whatever was placed at a height of one third from the base would remain fresh, so this was the “King’s Chamber”. This way, the body of the king was preserved for decades, hundreds of years perhaps? The effect of structures and the impact on human beings and energy levels in modern day terminology is known as Geo Biology or Bio Geometry.

Bio Geometry studies of the effect of structures and dimensions on the human occupants living within, analyzing their energy levels and watching how the structures affects their behavior patterns, responses and health. This is very similar to Feng shui/Vaastu and in effect is an essential aspect of Feng shui investigation as well.

What is energy?

Here we come to the question: What is energy about and how does it affect the lives of occupants living within a structure? The scientific definition of energy is the ability to produce an effect. So our feelings, thoughts and vitality are all energy. The structures and the environment, including the décor and furnishings of any premise affect energy, so a harmonious shape and supportive structure and environment ensure good flow of energy so the effect then is good, in and around the occupants.

The impact of geometrical shapes on human energy has always been universally recognized, yet this awareness gradually disappeared so that prior to the revival of interest in feng shui, the “modern” approach to ancient structures was limited to seeing them merely as symbolic art. There was little interest in examining the  function of their shapes or dimensions. The easy way out whenever paranormal or extraordinary effect was observed was simply to attribute them to “magical” practices.

Bio Geometry

Everything in nature has shape and everything has energy. Bio Geometry deals with a very specific kind of relationship between shape and energy. Shapes are said to bring balance into energy fields.
Does Bio Geometry, Vaastu and Feng Shui mean the same thing?

The Principles of Vaastu are similar to the principles of Quantum Physics in that it emphasizes that “Everything Vibrates and Pulsates”. Vaastu also asserts the notion through Vedic Philosophy that “everything is interconnected.” Vaastu had a great impact in the design of ancient temples and architecture of the early civilizations of India and its influence is still prevalent in modern times. Vaastu principles are essential to ensure that structures and their geometry are supportive to the occupants to ensure a free flow of energy into the home. And  generating the right Bio energy fields bring health and prosperity.

Feng Shui, the Chinese art of space design, has the same basis and the most important factor is to bring in what is known as “Life Force” or “chi’ energy into premises, which empowers the occupants with positive feel.

Feng Shui has been adjusting the environment for thousands of years by adding or subtracting items from the environment to create smoother energy flows. A proper understanding of the five elements and their influence gives an insight in designing our living spaces more harmoniously.

Let’s Now Look at Pyramids

Research and experiments have shown that Pyramids or the Pyramid shape have excellent healing and regenerative power. It was found that:

  • Water placed in a Pyramid-shaped enclosure loses chlorine and generally tastes better.
  • Plants grown under a Pyramid shape grow twice as fast in early life.
  • Food kept under a Pyramid shaped structure stays fresh for two to three times longer than food placed elsewhere.
  • Razor blades are kept sharper longer when placed under a Pyramid shaped container, in between uses.

Creating Your Own Pyramid

For purpose of experimentations, one could try making a pyramid shape out of cardboard, copper or stone, although good energy conductors such as copper will help generate a better energy flow.

The positioning of the pyramid is also important. With a 4-sided pyramid, if one of the pyramid sides should face True North, the energies within the pyramid are much stronger. The energies seem to be most effective at about one third of the height within a pyramid.

Traditionally, the upright angle of the large pyramid at Giza in Egypt has been used as a template for pyramids, this angle is around 52º, but one can also experiment with an angle of 58.55º (42,1º the angle of the corner upright to the ground) as it has been found to be more calming and is good for healing.

The Yantra Angle

It is not surprising that the ancient Indian Saints or Rishis (monks or gurus) were fully aware of the miraculous power of the Pyramid and its geometry. You will observe that many temples have adapted a Pyramid-like design in construction of the building and roof of the main sanctum. Prior to this, the Rishis (spiritual saints) used the calculations and geometry of a more advanced Pyramid design in creating various energy generators known as “Yantras”.

The most powerful of them all is the SHREE YANTRA, which from the scientific angle was very similar to and was indeed a kind of Pyramid.

Yantras date back to over 3000 years old tantric tradition. A yantra is the yogic equivalent of the Buddhist mandala. The Sri Yantra is a configuration of nine interlacing triangles centered around the ‘bindu’ (the central point of the yantra), drawn by Superimposing five downward pointing triangles, representing Shakti - the female energy and four upright triangles, representing Shiva - the male energy. These form a multi-level tier and the apex acts as the point of generator.

Miniature versions of Shree Yantra and Pyramids are now being used very effectively for balancing the “Chakras” in the human body, Vaastu corrections, Astrology, Colour Therapy, Spiritual Meditation and Medical Healing.

In India, it is quite common to find homes having a Pyramid roof top more towards the centre of the home (known as Bramhasthana in Vaastu) as it is supposed to act as a “Bio cosmic generator’ for the entire house.

Adapting designs with proper dimensions and angles in creating Pyramids on rooftops of homes or gardens, placing energy generators in the form of small Pyramids made of copper at specific weak energy locations and placing the Shree Yantra in strategic position in the common area of the home or altar, can enhance the positive energy fields in a premise and increase the comfort levels of the occupants.

Feng Shui for Mother’s Day - 2014

The second Sunday in the month of May is Mother's Day, a day we traditionally set aside for honoring the role of a Mother in our lives.  It would also be a day more appropriate for sending our healing prayers and energy to Mother Earth, the Great Mother that nurtures us all and supports us.

Mother earth is what we address the earth on which we live and achieve all that we can and could. Why do we call it Mother Earth? Mother knows only one thing, no matter whether the children are good or bad and that is to give all the love and unconditional support. Quite similarly earth gives us just about everything and anything irrespective of the kind of people who live on it. In Japanese the Mother goddess is known as Amaterasu, in Greek it is Demeter, in Egyptian it is Isis, Tibetans call it Tara and Hindus as Shakti. No matter what name each culture carries, the common factor is that all of them have the same qualities of compassion, love and strength.

The earliest known tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Ancient Greeks dedicated to the great goddess Rhea, wife of Cronus and mother of the Olympians. Ceremonies in her honor began around 250 BC.

We begin to understand how powerfully our journey through life is influenced by our Mother. She provided us with intimacy, involvement, attac

hment and a sense of relatedness to the rest of the world. It’s no surprise that George Washington went so far as to say “My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her”.

Although it’s our every day task to show our gratitude and thank our mother for all that we are, you could make this mother’s day special in a simple yet effective basic Feng Shui way.

Start with a cleaning of the home especially de-cluttering your mother’s room or giving her the helping hand in her daily chores. Most moms just want to spend a little time with their sons and daughters talking about their life. This is the time to just let her comments slide off your back if they are negative. This is a day to treat your mom as a friend, keep the conversation to the positives in your and her life and avoid arguments.

Feng Shui has the power to remove the old and stagnant chi and replace it with vibrant and new chi to aid her in achieving her life goals. You could light up special aroma sticks or candles to harness freshness and positive chi in the home and create a sense of serenity.

  • Gather all the photos of you and your mom throughout the years. Create a mosaic picture with all of these photos. Each small picture will call upon a memory that will bring a smile to your mom. Frame it and Hang it at the SW sector of the living room.
  • Amethyst gem tree and bracelets have the healing power and are harbingers of good energy and health and this Feng Shui symbolism is considered good especially for older mothers. Placing an image of pair of cranes or flying birds near the bed side, is said to symbolize longevity and good health.
  • If you wish to send flowers then a classic bouquet of chrysanthemums in yellow, cream, green and red is considered auspicious and Feng Shui associates these flowers with bringing laughter and happiness into the home. You could also think of gifting her Kaun yin bamboo set generally referred to as “lucky bamboo” and place them in the north or East corners of the living room which symbolize resilience, good health and growth.

Mother's Day is a day to appreciate your mother. Appreciation is giving thanks for their Unconditional love today, tomorrow and in the past. Adding a touch of Feng Shui on this special day would sure make it more memorable.

Year of The Yang Wood Horse

S B S SURENDRAN gives feng shui tips to benefit from the Chinese New Year

The location of the place we live in decides the feng shui of the place. Energy changes over a period of time further define the destiny and luck of the occupants of a place.

In feng shui, analysing the luck of the building and its occupants based on their personal Chinese zodiac has great significance. Most people who follow feng shui get their living space analysed annually. You can enhance a good luck cycle by rearranging your decor and artifacts and by placing elemental cures at strategic places. Making these annual corrections can go a long way in ensuring your peace and prosperity.

Don’t Be Impulsive
According to the Chinese calendar, 2014 is the year of the Yang Wood Horse. The Lunar New Year begins this year on January 30. The horse is the seventh animal of the Chinese zodiac and holds a special position as it represents one of the cardinal compass directions — south. The zodiac sign of the horse indicates energy, movement and prosperity. Its zodiac friends are tiger and dog. Together, they form a trio.

For 2014, the elements that will clash are wood and fire. Wood supports fire; hence at the surface, the year will appear to be smooth, supportive and productive. But this also indicates an active and aggressive year with fierce competition, including in the international arena. The element wood in combination with the year of the fire horse also indicates stubbornness. Compromises will be difficult, and explosions and fierce fighting will mark many areas of life.

The first half of 2014 looks optimistic with plenty of money and business opportunities, but it will be wise to exercise extreme caution and avoid impulsive decisions. Choose your business partners and associates for new ventures with care; this will help you in overcoming obstacles.

In general, property, real estate and stocks will do well. However, the stock market looks stronger in the first and second quarter of the year only. Natural resources, mining and tourism industries will be profitable. Fashion designing, textiles, agriculture and oil industries will face a slow down after stiff competition.

Protect Yourself
The compass directions that get afflicted in the year of the horse are north, south, northwest and east, so, placing appropriate cures in these compass directions will benefit your home. Sitting facing the south with your back towards the north at work amounts to exposing the back to unfavourable energies, so avoid sitting this way. Place three bamboo stems in water in the northeast of your home, and suspend a six-rod metal wind chime at the northwest point of the living room or the home.

The animal sign, rat, is in direct clash with the year’s sign of horse. Rat represents water element and horse, fire. This direct clash can cause irritants to the rat sign, and even though, this is a generic analysis, people born under this sign can take the support of the zodiac sheep, the secret friend of horse in Chinese zodiac astrology. Hence, wearing a small jade sheep pendant or placing a symbolic figure of a sheep by people coming under the zodiac sign of rat will benefit them immensely.

In general, it will be a year of optimism, enthusiasm and new innovations for progress along with plenty of fierce competition and clashes. But by adopting feng shui, you will forge ahead with positivity and protection.
